Welcome to the Liver team at the Hepatobiliary Pancreas Division of Seoul National University Hospital (SNUH). We are dedicated to surgical treatment for liver diseases, including liver transplantation, and conducting clinical and basic research on the liver. Our expertise covers a wide range of conditions, including hepatic malignancies, benign neoplasms, and benign liver diseases such as intrahepatic stones, liver abscesses, and liver trauma.

Our liver transplantation program achieves world-class results in treating hepatocellular carcinoma, cirrhosis, congenital liver disease, and metabolic liver disease. We are renowned for our expertise in laparoscopic surgery, particularly in living liver donors, making us a global center for pure laparoscopic living donor hepatectomy. Every year, numerous transplant and Hepatobiliary Pancreas surgeons from around the world visit us to learn advanced techniques.

In 2023, our team comprises six professors, five fellows, three physician assistants, two coordinators, and six researchers, totaling 21 highly skilled medical professionals. We are committed to providing the best patient management, conducting cutting-edge research, and delivering education to students, residents, and the wider medical community. The Division of Pancreatobiliary Surgery in the Department of Surgery of Seoul National University Hospital (SNUH) specializes in the surgical treatment of the diseases occurring in the pancreas, intra/extrahepatic bile duct, ampulla of Vater, and duodenum. The spectrum of these diseases ranges from benign and borderline to malignant diseases.

Pancreatobiliary surgery is one of the most challenging abdominal surgical procedures due to anatomical complexity and its frequent variation. Therefore, experience and high degree of expertise are the essential parts in this field. We have both experience and expertise in skills and knowledge required to qualify as a world-class center.

Since our first pancreatoduodenectomy in 1961, we have performed over 6,000 pancreatic resections by 2021 which is Korea's highest volume yet, and have world-class surgical experience. Recently, it is emerging as a world-class center in the field of pancreatic and biliary surgery by combining robotic surgery with high-level pancreatic and biliary surgery.

In terms of academic achievements, we have published over 200 articles in international journals over the past 10 years, and have been conducting numerous government funded researches. Recognized for these research achievements, we are conducting joint research with famous overseas centers, and have played a major role in establishing international guidelines for gallbladder cancer and pancreatic cancer precursors.

Since 1996, we have been hosting training courses for hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgeons in Korea every year, and have produced professors at many universities in Korea through excellent specialist education. As of 2023, 3 professors are dedicated to practice, research and education.
